Washi tape art

This blog post is inspired by an activity I used to do with one of my friends. We used to call it sticky tape. I collected a variation of tapes and let her stick it onto a piece of paper. A great little activity to develop fine motor skills and bilateral coordination (using both hands to hold and tear of the tape).

This time though, we used washi tape, which is so much more fun as you can get many different colours and patterns of tape. The picture ends up being vibrant and beautiful! A truly amazing art! You can hang it up in the kitchen, their bedroom or give it away as a present.

Here is a post for mud podge, if you choose to use it.

Washi tape art

Ingredients

  • A variety of washi tape
  • Canvas (or construction paper)
  • Mod podge and a paintbrush (optional)

Instructions

1

You basically give your child the washi tape and the canvas, and explain the process (tear of the tape, gluing it onto the canvas to make patterns/art). Older children will be able to tear of the tape, but you may have to help the little ones (you can line them up on the edge of the table).

2

As an after thought, I painted mod podge over the canvas. It then has a protective cover and a beautiful shine.

Notes

In the beginning you may find with the little ones, that the tape will get stuck on their fingers and/or scrunched up. Some children may find this frustrating, but it’s all part of the process. With time their fine motor skills will improve and therefore their tape skills

Here is a post on how to dye pasta.
