Lacing hearts is a great introduction into sewing and lacing. The kids use their fingers to thread the ribbon through the holes, so it´s a great way to develop their fine motor skills. If you find that the younger kids are struggling to push the lace through the holes, you can make the holes bigger or you can put tape on the end of the ribbon (to make end more pointier and therefore, easier to thread).
Lacing hearts
Ingredients
- Cardboard
- Scissors
- Markers
- Thin ribbon
- Hole puncher (or a biro pen)
Instructions
Cut out a large heart from the cardboard.
Punch holes along the heart at regular intervals (I have a hole puncher, but you can use a biro pen).
Draw with the markers on the heart.
Thread the lace through the top hole and tie a knot at the back. Then thread the lace through all the holes until you finish at the top again. Leave enough lace so that you can hang the heart up. Cut the lace and tie a knot (at the back).
Notes
I used chalk markers for this activity. However, I´ve used normal markers too, and they make the laced heart equally as beautiful.
